Best Soccer Players Who Wore the Number 14 Jersey

In this article, weโ€™ll be exploring the careers of the greatest number 14 players in soccer history.

In early days of soccer, jersey numbers signified the starting 11. Number 1 would be the goalkeeper and number 11 would be the farthest player down the pitch. The substitutes wore the numbers from 12 and above. In England though, teams were allowed to skip number 13 due to the superstition associated with it.

It was in the 1954 World Cup that players got specific squad numbers. This meant that the starting 11 did not necessarily have to wear numbers from 1 to 11. And therefore, the important soccer players started wearing numbers such as 14.

Number 14 has since become an iconic number, worn by some iconic soccer players. Some of the icons youโ€™ll see in the list are:

Johan Cruyff might be the the greatest soccer player ever in terms of the impact he had on the game. He was the most influential advocate for the โ€˜Total Footballโ€™ philosophy, both during his playing days and as a manager.

Cruyff was always a big fan of the number 14. He was given the nickname โ€œNummer 14โ€ by the Dutch media due to his affliction with the number. He also sets out 14 Rules in his autobiography as a tool to teach young people that sports and games can also be translated into everyday life.

Before the arrival of Cruyff, Dutch football was seen as a semi-professional and unimportant soccer country. Cruyff and his teammates changed that by showcasing the power of Total Football in the 1974 World Cup. They reached the final but lost to an amazing West Germany team.

Johan Cruyff started his career at Ajax in 1964 at the age of 17. He became a regular first team starter at the age of 18 in the 1965-66 season. In his first full season at Ajax, Cruyff scored 25 goals in 23 games, winning the league title that year.

But it wasnโ€™t until 1970, after a comeback from his injury, that Cruyff decided to wear number 14 instead of his regular number 9. It was almost unheard of at that time for a starter not to wear a number from 1-11. Just another way in which Cruyff revolutionized the game. From that moment onwards, Cruyff wore number 14, even with the Dutch national team.

When players like [Gareth] Bale and [Cristiano] Ronaldo are worth around โ‚ฌ100 million, Johan [Cruyff] would go in the billions!

Franz Beckenbauer in a 2014 interview

Guti came to be known for his vision, technique, creativity, passing range and ability to provide assists for teammates.

He also had a darker side to his game, receiving 11 red cards during his career. Due to this trait, along with his turbulent personal life off the pitch, Guti had difficulties with several of his managers throughout his career.

Hernรกndez started his career at Guadalajara in Mexico, scoring 26 goals for them in 64 appearances. His performances caught the eye of Manchester United scouts in 2009, and he was signed by the club in 2010.

  • Croatia

Modric is widely cited to be the one of the greatest midfielders of all time, and the greatest Croatian player ever. He plays mainly as a central midfielder, but can also play as an attacking midfielder or as a defensive midfielder.

Modric was the first player to put a stop to the Ronaldo-Messi dominance of Ballon dโ€™Or, by winning the award in 2018. But we have to go further back in his career, to explore the time he wore the number 14.

Modric arrived at Tottenham in 2008 and chose to wear the number 14 jersey in honor of the Dutch legend Johan Cruyff.

I wore the No.14 at Tottenham in honor of Johan Cruyff, and because the No.10 wasnโ€™t available.

Luka Modric, in a 2018 interview given to Marca.

Modric had a slow start at Spurs as he suffered from a knee injury and was labeled as a light-weight for the Premier League by the media. But with the arrival of Harry Redknapp as the manager, later in 2008, Modric began to shine. The previous manager was playing him out of position, and Redknapp realized that Modric should play in the central midfield.

Scholes and Modric are both intelligent footballers. They both influence their teams as well so it is a reasonable comparison. I donโ€™t think they are identical players but they have the same qualities in terms of controlling a game.

Sir Alex Ferguson

Modric played at White Hart Lane for 4 years before leaving for Real Madrid in 2012.

Internationally, Modric helped Croatia reach the 2018 World Cup as the captain of the team.

  • Liverpool FC
  • England
Embed from Getty Images

Jordan Henderson is one of those players who play in the shadows, but his leadership and consistency has helped Liverpool reach the top over the past decade.

Henderson joined Liverpool in 2011 and decided to wear the number 14 jersey. It was a shaky start for Henderson, as he was only able to cement a starting position in the team by the 2013-14 season. He played in 40 matches and scoring 5 goals during that season.

Liverpool came close to winning their first Premier League title that year, but due to the infamous slip-up in the last few games, Manchester City beat them to the title. We all remember the Gerrard slip against Chelsea, but did you know that Henderson was suspended for the last 4 games of the season?

Without Henderson, Liverpool lost against Chelsea and drew with Crystal Palace. He returned in the final game against Newcastle United, but it was too little too late.

Henderson was made the Liverpool captain after Steven Gerrard retired in 2015. Soon after, Jรผrgen Klopp also arrived at the club and continued with Henderson as his team captain. Together, they won A UEFA Champions League in 2018 and a Premier League title in 2019-20.

  • Club Estudiantes de La Plata
  • Argentina

Nicknamed โ€œEl Jefecitoโ€ (โ€œThe Little Chiefโ€), Mascherano was a rock at the back for Barcelona and Argentina. He started his career playing as a defensive midfielder, but after arriving at Barcelona in 2010, he was moved to the center-back role.

He had a tough first season at Barcelona, mostly starting games from the bench. But towards the end of the season, he showed his talent as a defender and led Barcelona to the La Liga title and UEFA Champions League victory.

The Barcelona board was so impressed by Mascheranoโ€™s performances that they offered him a contract extension in 2012 and put a release clause on him worth $120 million.

He was again instrumental in Barcelonaโ€™s 2015 treble and started in the Champions League final against Juventus. Barcelona won the game 3-1.

After leaving Barcelona, Mascherano finished his career at Hebei China Fortune and Argentine club Estudiantes.

Mascherano was a silent leader for Argentina, putting the team before himself every time. When stripped of the captaincy in 2011, Mascherano continued to be a leader for the team on and off the pitch. While the new captain, Lionel Messi, was the symbolic leader for Argentina, Mascherano remained the real commander.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has worn number 14 for:

  • Arsenal FC

Aubameyang was a talisman during his time at Arsenal. His style of play reminded Arsenal fans of Thierry Henry; running at the defenders and slotting it in with a side-foot finish.

Aubameyang arrived at Arsenal in January 2018, for a then-club-record fee of $68 million. He scored in his debut in a 5-1 win over Everton, chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. By October 2018, Aubameyang had set a Premier League record by scoring a goal every 104.6 minutes he played.

In his first full season at the club, Aubameyang won the Golden Boot award (shared with Salah and Mane) by scoring 22 goals in the 2018-19 season.

His relations with Arsenal and the coach, Mikel Arteta, soured in 2021 as he was stripped of the captaincy and was left out of the squad due to disciplinary reasons. Aubameyang left Arsenal for Barcelona on the deadline day of the 2022 January transfer window, ending his 4 year stay at the club.

Kante wore the number 14 for just one season at Leicester City โ€“ but what a season that was! Kante, along with his teammates, announced himself to the world by winning the 2015-16 Premier League title against all odds.

Nโ€™Golo Kante is not only a tireless and ball-winning midfielder, but also possesses excellent soccer IQ and off the ball movement.

Kante arrived at Leicester in 2015 as a replacement for Esteban Cambiasso. All the plaudits for finding him goes to Leicester City scout Steve Walsh, who had previously facilitated the transfers of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez to the team.

The year before Leicester had narrowly escaped relegation and were one of the favorites to go down in the 2015-16 season. Not a single analyst had predicted what was to come. Kante played a major role as Leicester went on to win the Premier League, and he was also named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Nโ€™Golo Kante is by far the best player in the Premier League this season.

Sir Alex Ferguson in 2016

Itโ€™s as if Chelsea knew that a team needed Kante if they wanted to win the Premier League, and so, they priced him away from Leicester City for $36 million in 2016. Chelsea would go on to win the league that year, and Kante became only the third player after Eric Cantona and Mark Schwarzer to win consecutive Premier League titles with different teams.

Major Accolades

  • He was named in the PFA Team of the Year twice, in 2015โ€“16 and 2016โ€“17.

In 1999, he was named PFA Playersโ€™ Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year, becoming the first player to win the awards while playing for a club outside the top 4.
