48 teams will take part in the tournament from 2026

The FIFA executive committee decided that 48 national teams will participate in the World Cup from 2026.

The first World Cup was held in 1930

Uruguay hosted the first edition of the World Cup in 1930. Uruguay also won the tournament.

The World Cup trophy is made of 18-carat gold

Only 13 teams participated in the first World Cup

There were only 13 participating nations in the 1930 World Cup. This was because the World Cup took place in Uruguay. For many European teams, the long and expensive journey by ship was a major deterrent.

Some European nations were also not sure about the importance of this new tournament.

The first World Cup goal

The first goal in the FIFA World Cup was scored by Lucien Laurent of France in the 1930 FIFA World Cup.

Laurent scored the goal in the 20th minute of the match against Mexico. France won the game 4-1.

World Cup was postponed during World War II

The 1942 and 1946 World Cup tournaments were canceled due to the World War II.

After the 1938 edition, the next World Cup took place in 1950.

The original World Cup trophy was named after the FIFA president

The original World Cup trophy was called the Jules Rimet Trophy. This was in honor of the former FIFA president Jules Rimet, who organized the first tournament.

The World Cup trophy was stolen twice

The original World Cup trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy, was stolen twice!

In 1966, four months before the World Cup tournament in England, the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen.

But seven days after the theft, it was recovered.

Then in 1983, the Jules Rimet Trophy was again stolen from the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, it was never found again.

A dog helped in recovering the World Cup trophy

The first time that the World Cup trophy was stolen, a dog named Pickle found it.

Seven days after the theft from Westminster Central Hall in London, Pickle found the trophy wrapped in newspaper and hidden under a hedge.

The 2022 World Cup was the first winter tournament

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was the first edition to take place in the winter season. It took place from November 20 to December 18, 2022.

FIFA made this decision to avoid the extreme high temperatures in Qatar during the summer.

Brazil is the only country to play in every World Cup

Brazil is the only country to have played in every World Cup tournament since its start. They have participated in all 22 World Cups to date.

India qualified for the 1950 World Cup but did not play

India qualified to play at the FIFA World Cup only once in 1950. But they did not take part in that tournament.

This was due to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) taking the Olympics and Asian Games more seriously.

They felt that participating in the World Cup would take the focus away from the preparation of the Olympics. The 1951 Asian Games were also going to take place in New Delhi, which made it a bigger focus for the association.

You might have also heard that India did not participate because the players refused to wear shoes. That is a myth.

FIFA used posters to promote the World Cup until 1966. The first official logo was designed for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Vittorio Pozzo is the only head coach to lead a team to two consecutive World Cup wins. He won the 1934 and 1938 World Cup trophies with Italy.

FIFA banned swapping shirts in 1986

FIFA banned shirt-swapping at the of the 1986 World Cup.

Why did FIFA introduce this weird rule?

Itโ€™s because FIFA did not want players to bare their chests on the field.

But this didnโ€™t stop certain players from swapping shirts. Diego Maradona and Lothar Matthรคus famously swapped their shirts during the 1986 World Cup final.

The longest gap between two World Cup titles

After winning their second World Cup trophy in 1938, it took Italy 44 years to win their third trophy. They won the third title in 1982.

Most goals scored by a team in a World Cup match

Hungary holds the record for the most goals scored by a team in a single FIFA World Cup. They scored 10 goals in a 10-1 victory over El Salvador at the 1982 World Cup.

Most appearances in a World Cup final

Germany holds the record for the most appearances in a World Cup final. Theyโ€™ve appeared in a final 8 times.

The record was earlier held by Lothar Matthรคus of Germany with 25 appearances.

Sir Viv Richards played in both Cricket and Soccer World Cups
